Welcome to our home page. Check back here often to find out about things happening in our class and at our school!
It's hard to believe that it's already November! This year is flying by! We have enjoyed learning new words through weekly vocabulary lessons. The students can't pass by a door being held open by a wedge without telling me, "I see a wedge!" The students are still getting used to the routines of the day and are learning how to be part of a classroom community. This is a slow precess. Working together, following school and classroom rules, and learning how to get along with so many others in our world are our primary goals. Our school also will be focusing on a Word of the Month which targets a certain positive behavior. This month's word is COOPERATION. Talk with your children when they come home and ask how Demonstrated cooperative behavior. Did they show cooperation by listening to the teacher? Did they work cooperatively in a group during center time or while working on a group project?
During the month of November we will focus on nature-based concepts such as the changing season of fall and the life cycle of a pumpkin. Working in groups at center-based activities such as poetry, word work, listening center, journal writing, partner reading, learning games, and handwriting will continue to be an area of development. In Readers Workshop students are learning concepts of print such as reading from left to right and pointing to words as they read. They are learning the sounds letters make and how to look at the first few letters in a word and saying the sounds while looking at the picture on the page to help them be a word-solver. It is absolutely essential that students read with or to someone at home. There is so much research that proves that children who are read to have richer vocabulary and better comprehension skills. Please try to read with your child for 15 minutes every night. Building a bedtime routine where you and your child read together before they go to sleep can be a very rewarding time for both you and your child. In math we will focus on counting, writing and comparing numbers to 10. The focus of Writers Workshop will be to add details to drawing and use knowledge of letter/sound relationships to write labels on their pictures.
