Welcome to a new school year! It is going to be a year full of learning and fun! In the first 6 weeks we will be focusing a lot on learning the routines and expectations of the classroom and our school. We will work to learn about one another and build relationships to create a safe, loving, and respectful classroom community. Of course we will be doing all this while learning about content such as using our five senses in science and practicing how to write with spacial awareness (You may hear your child say, "Start at the top of the Sky Line or the Plane Line...go down to the Grass Line", etc. since these are the names we give the lines on our paper). We will be learning about the sounds the letters say when we use our Lively Letter curriculum to help say these sounds. (For example, your child might refer to the sound the letters t and d make as "tongue dancers" because the tongue "tap dances" at the roof of the mouth to make the sound.) We will be doing a lot of counting in math by playing games to support this skill. We will also be learning ways to recognize our feelings and identify which emotional zone we are in. You may hear "I was in the Green Zone today because I stayed focused and on task!" or "I was in the Yellow Zone for a bit because I got a little silly, but I was able to get myself back in the Green Zone by taking some deep, calming breaths!" There is also the Blue Zone (sad, tired, bored) or Red Zone (angry, frustrated, out of control). We talk about strategies to use that can help us stay in control of our bodies and emotions (slow, deep breaths, drawing the figure 8 on our leg while inhaling and exhaling, counting to 10, etc.). This is very helpful in our goal of building and maintaining our classroom community.
Each month our school highlights a positive behavior to strive for. This month's word is KINDNESS. We will be talking a lot about what it means to be kind and recognizing when people demonstrate acts that go along with this word.
